- Bureau of Meteorology, Climate and Water
One of the guiding design principals of KANNFINCH’s fit-out for Bureau of Meteorology, Climate & Water, Canberra, was the highly analytical nature of the work carried out by the organisation. Key concepts we attempted to embody in the scheme were ‘technology’, ‘water’, ‘reflection’ and ‘drama’.
We radically redefined the existing environment by creating spaces that were welcoming and comfortable, yet also contemplative and dramatic. Theatrical blue lighting has been used to create and dark zones and a contrasting palette of textures are used such as natural stone and carpet that are in turn warm, reflective and shimmering.
The workspaces are planned to be a combination of open plan and visually transparent enclosed offices, which allows both privacy and openness. Workstations are modular, flexible and adjustable to suit various work styles and to allow opportunities for personalisation.
The scheme embraces and celebrates technology, with an unprecedented quantity of video conference units for large and small groups, including an 8m x 3m high definition video wall.
Sustainability initiatives in the design include flexible floorplate planning, materiality selection based on green credentials, lighting that is sensor controlled, dimmable and programmable by ISP address, and reuse of existing furniture where possible.
