House of Arts & Culture
- Competition Entry
The Beirut House of Arts & Culture brings together the experimental and the traditional and is a place for performance, experience and learning. The design incorporates a wide variety of uses including theatres, a cinema, an art gallery, a library, ticketing facilities, public spaces, change rooms, a bar and a restaurant.
Situated in an area of Beirut previously affected by war, one of the central aims was to create a robust design that gives a feeling of strength and resilience, while maintaining an open and accessible cultural facility.
The building is predominantly of concrete construction as it is a robust material allowing for prolonged and vigorous use, complimented by glass and steel, and softened by stone, timber and soft furnishings in specific areas.
Sustainability principles used in the design include:
- Passive solar design with natural ventilation
- Rainwater collection and re-use
- Solid mass construction
- Low energy lighting
