The ‘Koyankus’ project is a mixed use residential master plan on a 181 hectare site in Almaty, Kazakhstan. KANNFINCH’s design provides a new settlement for 20,000 people incorporating a new town centre. The project is comprised of 670,000sqm of gross floor area, consisting of commercial, retail, school and hospital zones, as well as 5000 residential apartments and 2000 housing lots. The aim of the master plan is to generate a vibrant community offering key services, walkable streets, and access to transport.
One of the key challenges was to integrate staged development into the planning, to allow the ‘community’ and required services to evolve simultaneously.
Sustainability features include water sensitive urban design and a pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
